Meta Launches Code Llama: AI Tool to Enhance Programming Workflow
Meta has announced the introduction of an artificial intelligence (AI) project aimed at improving programmers’ workflow.
The service, dubbed Code Llama, is a significant language model (LLM) that, according to Meta, can “use text prompts to generate and discuss code.” According to a release, Code Llama will be free for research, personal, and commercial usage under the original Llama2 community license.
According to Meta, the new AI tool has a variety of applications, including code completion and debugging using natural language prompts. The application supports a number of popular programming languages, including Java, PHP, C#, and Python.
Code Llama will be available in three parameter sizes: 7 billion, 13 billion, and 34 billion. Meta recommends the 7B and 13B models for low-latency jobs, although the 34B model provides superior coding aid despite requiring many GPUs.
“Code Llama has the potential to be used as a productivity and educational tool to help programmers write more robust, well-documented software,” stated Meta.
Meta announced the release of two Code Llama variations—Code Llama Python and Code Llama-Instruct—as an added layer of capability. The launch of a Python-specific variant is based on Meta’s conviction that the programming language “is the most benchmarked language for code generation.”
According to experts, Meta’s move to offer its AI tool free to use is part of a corporate effort to bridge the gap with industry leaders like OpenAI and Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL). Given their first-mover advantage, OpenAI and Google currently control a sizable portion of the generative AI business. Nonetheless, Meta’s open-source strategy may pay off for both the company and the broader ecosystem.
“Publicly available, code-specific models can aid in the development of new technologies that improve people’s lives,” said Meta. “By releasing code models like Code Llama, the entire community can evaluate their capabilities, identify issues, and fix vulnerabilities.”
After early successes with researchers and academics, Meta announced the commercial rollout of its LLM to compete with ChatGPT and Bard in July.
