Users can use the functionality to login to websites and applications without entering a username and password, instead relying on their device PIN or biometric information.

Passkeys, which are based on FIDO standards, were first announced in May 2022 as a strong and phishing-resistant password replacement. In recent months, it has been adopted by Apple, Google, and a number of other services.

Windows 11 Passkey: How it works

While Microsoft added passkey management to the Windows Insider programme in June 2023, this update represents the feature’s public release.

What is Windows 11 Passkey?

“Passkeys are the cross-platform future of secure sign-in management,” said David Weston, vice president of enterprise and operating system security. “A passkey creates a unique, unguessable cryptographic credential that is securely stored on your device.”

Passkeys have several advantages, including the fact that they are unique to each website or app and eliminate the need for complex passwords and the bother of remembering them. They are also synchronized between devices running the same operating system (or ecosystem), making sign-in easier.

How to Manage Windows 11 Passkey?

Passkeys on Windows are made using Windows Hello. Passkeys can be managed by going to Start > Settings > Accounts > Passkeys.

Microsoft also announced the addition of Windows Hello for Business to enterprise-managed Windows 11 devices in order to secure user identities by allowing IT departments to create a policy for Microsoft Entra ID-linked computers.

Enhancements to the built-in Windows Firewall and a new Custom App Control option to ensure that only approved and trusted programmes are permitted onto devices and protect endpoints from malicious code are two other important enterprise-related additions.

Role of Application Control in Security Strategy

“By controlling unwanted or malicious code from running, application control is a critical part of an overall security strategy,” Weston stated. “Application control is often cited as one of the most effective means of defending against malware.”
